Location: The unincorporated town of McCloud is located in Siskiyou County on Highway 89 about 11 miles east of Interstate 5. South of the Oregon border about 60 miles, the gentle valley lies on the south slope of the snowy volcanic peak of Mt. Shasta towering 14,162 feet. The elevation of McCloud is 3,200 feet and sloping upwards. Transportation: Highway 89 passes McCloud and is used as a shortcut to Reno from Interstate 5. The best way to see the area is by car as there are no taxis or town bus systems here. Major Airports are located in Redding, California (80 miles south) and in Medford, Oregon (100 miles north). A smaller airport is located in Weed ( 22 miles north on Interstate 5). Population: Since McCloud is unincorporated, the population figures reflect the immediate rural area around the town. We enjoy four distinct seasons including snow during the winter. Most of the precipitation falls between mid-October to mid-May with occasional thunderstorms during our typically dry summers. It is an 80 bed hospital with 20 doctors on staff and includes the Care Center. The emergency room is a Certified Trauma Center. A clinic is located in McCloud. Labor Market: McCloud employees a majority of timber workers in the surrounding forests. About 60% of Siskiyou County land is government-owned forests. Agriculture, tourism, timber and government services create the bulk of county jobs. Job analysis shows 29% government, 19.5% services and 18.8% trade jobs. County unemployment rate was 10.9% in July 1998. Utilities: Service for water, sewer and garbage is provided by the McCloud Community Services District.
